Reading Skincare ingredients

Summer is in full swing, and that comes along with plenty of summer activities that keep calendars full and schedules busy. It’s easy to get overwhelmed between planning vacations, taking kids to summer camps, hitting the pool, and planning for back to school shopping too. Keep the anxiety at bay by etching out a couple minutes each day to do something to take care of yourself. You’ve been working so hard non-stop to make all the summer magic happen, and that’s a lot of work. If you need some resources to help with the stress of juggling it all, check out our previous  for some blog for some quick and easy calming techniques that you can incorporate into your daily routine.

READING SKINCARE LABELS
Some simple self-care can go a long way to help take a break from all the busy-ness of the summer season. While you wind down at the end of the day, cleanse your face and begin your evening skincare routine, take a second to read the labels on the skincare items you’ve been using. Many people think to look at food labels, but that’s not the only ingredient list you should be reading. When it comes to what we put on our skin every day, most people forget to check out those ingredients as well. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and what you put on it matters.

SIMPLE INGREDIENTS YOU CAN TRUST
It can be intimidating at first glance if you’re not familiar with reading skincare ingredients, but we’ll help break it down for you. One easy thing to look for is a simple ingredient list that’s not a mile long. If you take a look at the reHEMP’s RENEW nighttime face oil, for example, you’ll notice it only contains 6 simple plant-based ingredients: Hemp Seed Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Broad Spectrum CBD Extract, Organic Reishi Extract, and Organic Lavender Essential Oil. It’s comforting when you find that you’re already familiar with most (or all) of the ingredients on a label. If you’re new to CBD skincare and want to learn more about it, check out our blog about CBD Skincare Game Changers for ideas on a few plant-based products you can incorporate into your skincare routine.

CONCENTRATION MATTERS
It’s important to note that the ingredients are listed in order of concentration. The first 5 ingredients are what makes up the bulk of the product. After that, ingredients listed towards the bottom of the list have lower impact on the overall efficacy of the product. So if you notice a chemical-laden ingredient list with a bunch of hard-to-pronounce items at the top of the list and only a few natural ingredients towards the end, that should be a red flag. To learn more about what ingredients to avoid, check back later this month, and we’ll dive into the top 5 red flag skincare ingredients together.

CRUELTY-FREE PRODUCTS
More people are becoming mindful about the impact of their shopping choices and taking the time to learn more about what ingredients go into their products, how they’re sourced, and taking seeking out products that are cruelty-free. Reading the labels on their beauty and skincare products is an important place to start when you’re trying to make a conscious effort to use products that have good ingredients and don’t test on animals. Recently we shared our most exciting announcement yet: reHEMP is now officially Leaping Bunny Certified! To read more about what the Leaping Bunny program is and why you should choose products that are Leaping Bunny certified, we recently posted a two-part blog series on the topic.
